Chapter Ten

The alarm sounds loudly in my ear, and even though I know I have to get up, I don’t want to. We have to leave today to head back to Ohio, and I really want to stay here. I lightly tap a snoring Xavier on the arm before slowly climbing out of the bed. He begins to stretch as I walk past him and into the bathroom to start getting ready. Once my teeth are brushed and my face is washed, I come out and pick up my Juicy Couture jogging outfit off the top of the dresser and slip it on. I look up when I see Xavier come out of the bathroom, still stretching and yawning.

“Are you ready to go?” he asks.

“No, but I don’t have a choice,” I say, shrugging my shoulders.

“Well, you know what we have to do. Like I said, if this is really what you want, we’ll be back soon.”

“I know, and I completely understand. It just seems like that’s so far away.” I wiggle my foot into my white Air Max, before tying the laces.

He looks at me with a serious face before speaking. “Patience is the key to life, Brandy. Anything worth having doesn’t come at the drop of a dime. You have to wait on it. You’ll be fine, and we’ll be back before you know it.”

I don’t reply and just begin working on the next shoe. Even though I know what he’s saying is true, that doesn’t change the fact that I don’t want to wait. I know we have to go back to Ohio, because we’ve both got loose ends there that need to be tied up, but in my mind, that stuff won’t take almost a year to do. Truthfully, I could get the things I have to get done in about two to three months. All I have to do is bleed Taz dry and put my condo up for sale. At first, I considered keeping it, but then I realized there’d be no reason to. If I have it my way, I will never visit Ohio again, so it’s pointless not to sell it. Even if I rented it out, I’d have to keep ties with the tenant, and I don’t want to fool with that.

I offer Xavier a weak smile and stand up, preparing to go downstairs. As I pass him, he grabs hold of my arm and pulls me close, into a tight embrace. He brings his lips really close to my ear and whispers that he loves me, then lets me go. I don’t say anything; I’m too upset, in a way. I know I shouldn’t be angry with him, but I can’t help it. It’s his idea to make me stay in Ohio for another year, not mine. Like I said, if it were up to me, we’d be back here by Christmas. I exhale and hit the corner on my way down the stairs, preparing to leave the place I’ve grown to love.
